Hello from the sticker at Lewes town walk. Here's what we know, for you and your dog. More dog-friendly places nearby
Cleo & Bonnie haven't logged this one yet. The line is ours, drawn on OpenStreetMap streets between the sights. It has not been paced out on the ground, so go by the streets, not the line.
By train
Up to two dogs travel free with each passenger. Dogs stay on a lead on the train and at the station, and never on the seats.
National Rail Conditions of Travel, condition 24 (valid from 30 July 2026); National Rail's station pages.
Parking
Lewes station's car park (APCOA, Station Street, BN7 2UP): £4.00 for an hour, £9.40 all day on weekdays, £8.30 all day at weekends, Sundays included, and £2.50 from 5pm, each plus a 15p fee. Pay with the APCOA Connect app (code 1207) or the QR code on the signs. The entrance takes vehicles up to 2 m high. From APCOA, Lewes station, undated, read 2 Oct 2026.
The council has car parks across the town too. We couldn't read their prices, so check the council's own list before you go. From Lewes District Council, 2026 car park charges (PDF), 2026, read 2 Oct 2026.
The stiles
A street route, so none are expected, but this line has not been walked for the site and there is no count.
The ground
Streets and pavements round the middle of Lewes. On the map's elevation data the line climbs about 50 metres in total: the High Street rises from the river towards the castle, and Station Street is the steep way up from the station. Kerbs, steps, cobbles, narrow pavements and crossings have not been checked on the ground. Keere Street's cobbles are not on the line.
For dogs
Kept to streets and pavements, so no park or garden rules come into it. Dogs are welcome through the Barbican Gate of Lewes Castle and round the outside of the castle; look for the deep grooves in the gate's stone, where local lore says soldiers sharpened their swords. No dogs in the ticketed castle grounds, except assistance dogs. The district's fouling order applies: pick up on land open to the public. For a stop on the way, the two cosy pub walks share these streets and list the pubs we've checked.
On the way
Chosen by us from the places we've checked. The ones on our list link to their page, with what we know about dogs there.

Mud, animals, how busy: a few taps. The answers (never your words or name) show here for three weeks, to help the next walker.
The route
Start Lewes station
The line is on our map. It goes from the station up Station Street to the Town Hall, along to the Barbican Gate of the castle and Bull House, back east to the Market Tower, down to Cliffe Bridge, and returns by Friars Walk. The distance is the length of that line, and the time is an estimate for an easy stroll, without the stops. Neither has been paced out on the ground.
