Privacy
Lewes Dogs is run in Lewes by David Osborne, with Cleo and Bonnie. We keep as little as we can. For anything below, or to see, change or delete what we hold about you, email hello@lewesdogs.co.uk.
When you visit
- We count visits with Plausible, on our own server. It sets no cookies and keeps nothing that identifies you: just the page, where you came from, your country, and the kind of browser and device. If you search the places, it counts the words you searched for (up to 40 letters) and whether anything came up, so we know which places to add; so don't type anything personal there.
- The map's pictures come from OpenFreeMap, so your browser asks them for each part of the map, as it would any website. Everything else, the fonts included, comes from us.
- The dog forecast's readings and the map's live buses are fetched by our own server, so your browser only ever talks to us for them.
- Google Maps hears nothing from us unless you tap a link to it.
- "Near me" on the map uses your device's location in your browser only. It's never sent to us.
- If you add the site to your home screen, the pages you've visited are kept on your phone, for when there's no signal.
- A few choices are remembered in your own browser, and never sent to us: the places you save, night mode, a season's look you've turned off, and the Bonfire society you picked. They're there because you asked for them, so there's no cookie banner. For the visit only, it also keeps the day's weather, so the forecast doesn't load twice, which tab you're on, and how many times you've booped the dogs; and a copy of the last pages you opened, so they still open on the Downs without a signal. Clearing your browser's data for the site clears all of it.
When you send us something
- A place to suggest (with any photos of it), a correction to a place's page, how a visit or a walk went, an event, a photo of your dog, a lost or found dog, a sighting of a dog on one of our alerts, or an update to your own listing goes into the site's inbox, on Cloudflare, who host the site. Only we read it. A listing update's email is only for checking it's really you.
- Nothing you send goes on the site until we've checked it, and only with your yes: a photo or an alert, and your name or contact details only if you ticked the box for them. Photos of a place come only with your tick that you took them or may share them, and that anyone in them is happy to be shown. If you give your dog's Instagram with a photo, that handle is shown under the photo. If you tick that Lewes Dogs can post the photo on Instagram, we may share it on @lewesdogs. Otherwise it stays on the website. Your email is never shown. If you leave it with a photo of your dog, we send you one email when the photo is up, through Brevo, our email service; it isn't added to any mailing list.
- If you tell us you've seen a dog on one of our alerts, we pass what you said, with your name and phone or email, to the dog's owner (or to whoever found it), so they can reach you. Nobody else sees it.
- We delete what you send from the inbox within 30 days of dealing with it. What we keep after that is only what goes on the site, or a note on the place it's about.
- To stop spam, we keep a scrambled form of your internet address for an hour, never the address itself. If Cloudflare's spam check (Turnstile) appears on a form, Cloudflare sees the visit to check you're a person.
- We take anything down, and delete it, when you ask.
Your rights
- You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted, and ask us to stop using it. Email hello@lewesdogs.co.uk; we answer within a month, and it costs nothing.
- To make sure we only ever hand your details to you, we reply to the email address or phone number we already have for you, or ask you something about what you sent that only the sender would know. We don't ask for documents.
- If you're unhappy with how we've handled your details, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

The weekly email
- Your email address, and your first name if you give it, are kept in our own mailing list on our own server, and the emails are sent through Brevo, our email service.
- We email a link to confirm first, and send nothing else until you click it.
- We don't track whether you open the emails or click their links.
- Every email has a link to unsubscribe, which takes you off at once.
