The stiles
No count given. The directions cross two stiles on the Mount Caburn ridge between Glynde and the Lewes golf course; the rest of the route uses gates, kissing gates and fieldgates (the climb out of Glynde is through kissing gates).
Livestock
No livestock warnings. The directions mention a cattle stockade on the South Downs Way above Southease and a cattle grid on the escarpment west of Rodmell.
The ground
Rated 7 out of 10: three steep climbs, otherwise mostly level on wide, distinct paths. Road sections on the Juggs Road lane out of Lewes, a fast road to cross near Kingston, lanes at Rodmell and Southease, and the A27 at Glynde, crossed using the central strip. Crosses the River Ouse at Southease. Drinking-water tap at Southease church.
For dogs
The source says nothing about dogs.

On the Downs
Between 1 March and 31 July, dogs must be on a short lead (2 metres or less) on open access land, and near livestock at any time of year. Since 18 March 2026, a dog that worries livestock on a road or path, not just on farmland, is an offence.
The CROW Act 2000, Schedule 2; the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 as amended, in force 18 March 2026 (legislation.gov.uk).
