By train
Up to two dogs travel free with each passenger. Dogs stay on a lead on the train and at the station, and never on the seats.
National Rail Conditions of Travel, condition 24 (valid from 30 July 2026); National Rail's station pages.
The stiles
No count given. On the main route the climb back to the ridge after the Half Moon passes a redundant stile and crosses two step stiles into a wood; near Hassocks and near Offham the directions tell you to ignore paths leading to stiles. The descent through Offham and the Ouse embankment use swing gates and kissing gates. The alternative ending to Plumpton station crosses several stiles and footbridges.
Livestock
The source mentions no livestock.
The ground
Rated 5 out of 10. A road down to Plumpton that can be slippery in the wet; after Black Cap a chalky track to Offham, also slippery in the wet; an earth track below Offham that is muddy in winter; then a gravel-topped Environment Agency flood embankment along the Ouse into Lewes. The A275 is crossed at Offham. Part of the Plumpton station ending is described as getting 'a whole lot muddier'.
For dogs
The source says nothing about dogs.

On the Downs
Between 1 March and 31 July, dogs must be on a short lead (2 metres or less) on open access land, and near livestock at any time of year. Since 18 March 2026, a dog that worries livestock on a road or path, not just on farmland, is an offence.
The CROW Act 2000, Schedule 2; the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 as amended, in force 18 March 2026 (legislation.gov.uk).
