The stiles

Not counted by the park, which warns of 'uneven footpaths with stiles'. Its directions cross at least 5 by name (one going down into Litlington, four on the field paths towards Alfriston) and then 'a series of stiles' on the last riverside stretch to Exceat Bridge, with many kissing gates.

Livestock

The page names no animals, but asks for dogs on a lead 'around livestock, horses and wildlife', and the walk crosses fields on the way to Alfriston.

The ground

'Uneven footpaths with stiles and several short steep climbs', quiet roads and forest tracks, the park says: over the hill from Exceat into Friston Forest, down steps to Westdean, forest tracks and more steps on the South Downs Way, field paths in the Cuckmere valley, then the flat, winding river bank all the way back.

For dogs

'For a safe and fun visit with your dog please remember to keep them on a lead,' and on a lead 'around livestock, horses and wildlife'. 'Always bag and bin your dog poo – any public bin will do!' CAMRA's Sussex pub guide lists the Plough & Harrow as dog friendly; we found nothing on whether dogs can join you at the tea gardens, so ask. Small dogs may need a lift over the stiles.

On the Downs

Between 1 March and 31 July, dogs must be on a short lead (2 metres or less) on open access land, and near livestock at any time of year. Since 18 March 2026, a dog that worries livestock on a road or path, not just on farmland, is an offence.

The CROW Act 2000, Schedule 2; the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 as amended, in force 18 March 2026 (legislation.gov.uk).

If something goes wrong out there, an adder bite, a lost dog, a vet at night: help and emergencies.
