Hello from the sticker at Chailey Common and the windmill. Here's what we know, for you and your dog. More dog-friendly places nearby
Cleo & Bonnie haven't logged this one yet. The line is ours, drawn on the paths OpenStreetMap has across Red House Common. The rules are the county council's.
The stiles
Open common, so none are expected, but this line has not been walked for the site and there is no count.
Livestock
'The site is grazed by Hebridean sheep, Exmoor ponies and cattle,' says the county council, which keeps at least one of the commons free of cattle. Red House Common was being grazed when we read its page.
The ground
Lowland heath of heather and gorse, with many small ponds; horses share the paths, and there's no cycling on the commons. Ground and gradients have not been checked on the ground.
For dogs
'Dogs are welcome but dog owners are asked to clean up after their dogs' (there are bins in all the car parks), and 'please keep dogs under close control, particularly around livestock' and in the bird nesting season, April to September. Keep to the paths, the council asks. As open access land, the common also has the national rule: dogs on a short lead from 1 March to 31 July.
Walked it with your dog? Tell us how it was
Mud, animals, how busy: a few taps. The answers (never your words or name) show here for three weeks, to help the next walker.
The route
Start Red House Common car park, Warrs Hill Lane
The line is on our map. It goes from the car park on Warrs Hill Lane across the north-west of the common to the windmill on Mill Lane, and back across the east of the common. The distance is the length of that line, and the time is an estimate for an easy stroll. Neither has been paced out on the ground.
